J.J. was finishing up Mission: Impossible III in Japan doing the final leg of his publicity tour. His son Henry was with him, who was seven at the time and had never been to Japan. Like father like son, they were trolling toy stores, and everywhere they went were Godzilla toys. While there, he started thinking that we don't have our own monster in the States. We have King Kong, which is a completely different thing, but we don't have a monster of our own. So he called us from Japan and said, "I think I have a great idea for a movie."

Chris Nolan's memories of Heath Ledger
One time he and another actor were shooting a complex scene. We had two days to shoot it, and at the end of the first day, they'd really found something and Heath was worried that he might not have it if we stopped. He wanted to carry on and finish. It's tough to ask the crew to work late when we all know there's plenty of time to finish the next day. But everyone seemed to understand that Heath had something special and that we had to capture it before it disappeared. Months later, I learned that as Heath left the set that night, he quietly thanked each crew member for working late. Quietly. Not trying to make a point, just grateful for the chance to create that they'd given him.

Battletrek: How many visual effects shots will there be in the new movie?
Roger Guyett (Visual Effects Supervisor): We’re anticipating about 1000.
Captain April: ILM is doing the effects for the film. Will it all be CGI or have they built a physical model of the New Enterprise? Also when will we see a photo of the finished Enterprise?
JJ Abrams: I was lucky enough to work with ILM on Mission: Impossible III. Roger Guyette and Sherri Hanson are geniuses who are also a true joy to work with. ILM has always been the best — but in recent years they have — remarkably — gotten even better, making the virtual photo-real.
Having said that, my goal is to make Trek REAL — that is to say, not have it be camp — not have it be phony — not have it look like a scrap of green screen was used anywhere. Of course, this is Star Trek. We’re using every trick in the book. But WHEREVER WE CAN, we are shooting on sets — either built on sound stages or expanding upon found locations. This is important. What this means is that the movie won’t have that “actors performing in a blue or green void then placed in front of a spaceship set” feeling that makes me insane. One of our really talented designers recently commented online how we shot on a green screen set and what a shame that was, since we could have built something incredible. And she was right — for that one scene, which will last for maybe thirty seconds on screen, we built only pieces and were surrounded by green. But that is the exception. We can’t build EVERYTHING, and need to make this film on a budget (partly because that’s the $ we have, and partly because I want the studio to see Trek as viable!). The Enterprise will be a combo of the physical and the virtual. A photo is forthcoming!

Can Pumuckl have a girlfriend and get married?
Ok, I doubt a lot of people know who "Pumuckl" is and really couldn't care less about this, but I just have to share this weird story.
Apparently there is a dispute in Munich going on about the idea that the cartoon character "Pumuckl" could have a girlfriend and get married.
It all started with artist Barbara von Johnson, who is drawing the character for the classic TV show, appearing on Munich's local TV channel and asking for a drawing competition which would have people come up with a girlfriend for Pumuckl. First prize would be the possibility to attend the wedding between the two.
The creator of Pumuckl, Ellis Kaut, wasn't very fond of this idea and went to court. Her argument being that Pumuckl is a ghost and because of that couldn't have a girlfriend because the Pumuckl character, who's usually up to no good, has no defined gender and is therefore a asexual.
But the court rejected the complaint. The copyright law of the creator has not been violated because the drawing competition is not a continuation of Pumuckls story as told so far, according to judge Matthias Zigann.
But when it comes to a direct continuation of Pumuckls story and life only the creator, Ellis Kaut, has the power to decide if and when Pumuckl will get a girlfriend or get married.
I agree that the creator should have final say and get consulted when it comes to expanding the mythology and story of Pumuckl. But what strikes me as odd is that you should believe that Pumuckl has no gender. HUH? The look, voice and actions always struck me as male. Anyhoo. I'm sure that people who know the show will get a kick out of this story. Everybody else just move along. :)

Colin Brady was previously announced as helmer. No word yet as to why Brady, who's helming the upcoming CG feature film based on "The Smurfs," was let go.

Oscar nominee reflects on making movie magic
From news.com:Bonecrusher on roller skates was kind of the look we ended up with: One of our lead animators here at ILM came up with it, and we presented it to Michael and said, "What do you think of this guy skating like a hockey player, going in for the most brutal check you've ever seen?" And he was like, "What are you guys thinking?" But then he played it again and he was like "Okay, that looks kind of cool." And then he just fell in love with it from there.

Toy Story 3D
JV Pixar reports that Toy Story 3 will be presented in 3D, which is awesome. First James Cameron and now Pixar, to me so far the only hopes of actually introducing something in 3D that is essential to the story and not just a gimmick. Head over there for more details.
